Taiwan companies still in early stage of mobile device use: IDC

The China Post - - LOCAL -

Companies in Taiwan are taking steps to utilize mobile devices in the workplace but remain in the early stages of building “mobile- first” enterprises, according to a survey released Thursday by research group International Data Corp. (IDC).

The IDC Mobility Survey reveals that only 4 percent of Taiwanese firms have adopted a Build Your Own Device (BYOD)only strategy for mobile devices in the workplace, while 33 percent use a corporate-issued mod- el and 58 percent have adopted a mixed model of BYOD and corporate- issued devices.

The findings differ from a more balanced situation in the Asia Pacific region, excluding Japan, where 22 percent of companies have adopted a BYOD-only strategy for mobile devices and 20 percent use a corporate-issued model, with 29 percent using a mixed model of both approaches.

BYOD refers to the policy of permitting employees to bring their personal mobile devices ( laptops, tablets and smart- phones) to their workplaces and to use those devices to access privileged company information and applications.

For an organization’s approach to device management, the IDC found that only 4 percent of Taiwanese companies are capable of “advanced” device management that allows for logging, reporting and analytics from employees’ devices, while 30 percent said they apply “standardized” device management for all devices accessing company data.

The results lag behind average figures in the Asia- Pacific region, excluding Japan, where 14 percent of companies are capable of “advanced” device management and 29 percent use “standardized” device management, according to the IDC survey.

It suggested that the reason Taiwanese companies are lagging behind is concern over security and malware on mobile devices, said Charles Reed Anderson, vice president and head of mobility and Internet of Things at IDC’s Asia- Pacific regional team.

“Enterprises are finally moving beyond the device and focusing on the apps. The focus by large vendors on enterprise mobility is driving market maturity. It is still early days -- the true opportunities for vendors and customers lie ahead of us,” Anderson concluded at the IDC Enterprise Mobility Conference in Taipei.

The IDC Mobility Survey collected valid samples from over 200 companies in Taiwan and a total of 3,510 enterprises in the Asia- Pacific region, excluding Japan.
