Leg­isla­tive Yuan con­firms grand jus­tice nom­i­na­tions

The Leg­isla­tive Yuan con­firmed Fri­day four nom­i­na­tions by Pres­i­dent Ma Ying- jeou for grand jus­tices, mak­ing all 15 jus­tices of the Con­sti­tu­tional Court Ma’s ap­pointees.

The four nom­i­nees are lawyer Huang Horng-shya ( ), Deputy Min­is­ter of Jus­tice Wu Chen- huan ( ) , Na­tional Tai­wan Uni­ver­sity law pro­fes­sor Tsai Ming- cheng ( ) and Shilin Dis­trict Court Pres­i­dent Lin Jyun- yi ( ).

There are 112 seats in the leg­is­la­ture, and nom­i­nees must ob­tain half of the votes to con­sider their mo­tion passed.

Huang ob­tained 71 “yes” votes, 34 “no” votes, and 4 “i nvalid” votes; Wu got 65 “yes” votes, 41 “no” votes, and three “in­valid” votes; Tsai ob­tained 79 “yes” votes, 28 “no” votes, and two “in­valid” votes; and Lin got 63 “yes” votes, 44 “no” votes, and two “in­valid” votes.

Ma has pre­vi­ously ap­pointed 11 other grand jus­tices since he took of­fice in May 2008.
