Yahoo launches apps for Apple Watch in Taiwan
Yahoo Inc. launched four apps designed for Apple Inc.’s smartwatch in Taiwan Monday as the search engine’s latest attempt to push its “mobile first” strategy.
The four free apps — including Yahoo Weather, Yahoo Sports Fantasy, Yahoo News Digest and Yahoo News Hong Kong — are redesigned and simplified for the Apple Watch, allowing Yahoo to deliver “a highly engaging and personal experience in a new way,” according to the company.
The Yahoo Weather app on Apple Watch, for example, will feature morning updates and evening forecasts through notifications on the watch’s graphic interface called “Glance.”
Fernando Delgado, senior director of product management who oversees Yahoo apps, told a media briefing in Taipei that the design of the Apple Watch has inspired Yahoo to “reimagine mobile services” and consider how to integrate mobile products with innovative technology.
He said Yahoo will continue to collect feedback from users to determine the next wave of apps that will be launched globally, including Taiwan.
Under Yahoo’s “mobile first” strategy that has been promoted by CEO Marissa Mayer since 2012, the number of Yahoo’s mobile monthly active users has increased from 400 million in November 2013 to around 600 million currently, Delgado said.
Yahoo’s revenues generated from mobile devices grew by 61 percent year on-year to US$234 million in the first quarter of this year, while the company’s mobile team has expanded from only 37 people in 2012 to over 500 people currently, he said.
