Sus­pect ac­cused of rob­bing man on an ex­press train caught

Author­i­ties have ap­pre­hended a sus­pect for the al­legedly rob­bing of an el­derly man aboard an ex­press train yesterday evening in New Taipei City.

The man, whose iden­tity has not been re­leased and who is es­ti­mated to be around 20 years old was re­ported to have at­tempted to steal from a el­derly man (es­ti­mated to be 70 years old) when the Tai­wan Rail­way’s Tze-Chi­ang Ltd. Ex­press ( ) No. 145 train was mak­ing a sched­uled stop at New Taipei’s Ban­qiao sta­tion.

Of­fi­cials from the Rail­way Po­lice Bureau’s Ban­qiao Precinct (

) stated that the sus­pect at­tempted to steal per­sonal ef­fects from the older man who ap­peared to be selling mag­no­lia flower loops for a liv­ing. A scuf­fle en­sued in the train’s fifth car when it ar­rived at the sta­tion at 6:23 p.m. Due to the in­ci­dent, the Kaoh­si­ung-bound train was de­layed for ap­prox­i­mately three min­utes.

As train op­er­a­tion of­fi­cials ap­proached the scene, the sus­pect at­tempted to flee from the plat­form but was stopped by se­cu­rity per­son­nel who turned him over to rail­way po­lice. Po­lice are con­tin­u­ing their in­ves­ti­ga­tions into the mat­ter.

Train Ac­ci­dents Kill 2

In re­lated news, north­bound trains hit pedes­tri­ans at rail cross­ings in Taichung and Tainan yesterday, killing two peo­ple and de­lay­ing 37 trains on Dragon Boat Fes­ti­val day.

The first ac­ci­dent hap­pened at 8:43 a.m. in the Taichung area be­tween Cheng­gong Sta­tion and Xin­wuri Sta­tion, caus­ing de­lays to 27 trains that af­fected 10,470 pas­sen­gers, the Tai­wan Rail­ways Ad­min­is­tra­tion (TRA) said.

The TRA re­stored oper­a­tions to nor­mal at 11:09 a.m.

The sec­ond ac­ci­dent oc­curred at 3:11 p.m. north of Yongkang Sta­tion, caus­ing de­lays to 10 trains that af­fected some 3,200 pas­sen­gers, the TRA said.

The pedes­trian who was hit in the Tainan ac­ci­dent, a home­less man in his 60s, was killed on the spot.

Rail ser­vices re­sumed to nor­mal at 3:55 p.m.

The ac­ci­dents oc­curred dur­ing a peak time for train travel, com­ing in the mid­dle of a three-day hol­i­day week­end for the Dragon Boat Fes­ti­val that be­gan Fri­day.
