Runaway suspect in fraud probe repatriated: CIB
A runaway suspect who was charged with fraud was extradited back to Taiwan on June 18 after spending nine years on the run in Vietnam, the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB, ) has announced.
The suspect surnamed Chan ( ) was charged with fraud by the Taipei District Prosecutors Office for allegedly using stolen checks to defraud over NT$14 million in 2006.
In an attempt to avoid possible prison time, Chan secretly left Taiwan for Vietnam on April 23, 2006.
He was put on the wanted list by the Taipei District Prosecutors Office on Nov. 30, 2006.
The CIB recently received information that Chan was hiding in Binh Duong province, Vietnam. It then informed the Vietnamese authorities before they arrested Chan in November 2014. During his detention in Vietnam, Chan several times tried to bribe local authorities in an attempt to avoid being sent back to Taiwan for trial.
Over the past six months, the CIB had been calling on Vietnamese authorities to extradite the suspect back to Taiwan.
In accordance with the Taiwan- Vietnam Joint Fight against Crime and Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement, Chan was finally deported back to Taiwan on June 18, the CIB said.
