Wei-Yin Chen to re­turn to ma­jor leagues

Tai­wanese base­ball pitcher Weiyin Chen ( ), who plays for the Bal­ti­more Ori­oles, will start a game for the team against the Cleve­land In­di­ans af­ter a sur­prise as­sign­ment to the mi­nor leagues on June 17.

The Ori­oles’ of­fi­cial web­site lists Chen as a start­ing pitcher in the June 27 match, adding that “the southpaw was briefly op­tioned to Class A Ad­vanced Fred­er­ick to clear a ros­ter spot for the Ori­oles, de­spite com­ing off one of his best out­ings of the sea­son.”

Chen (3-4) struck out nine and walked one to help the Ori­oles beat the Philadelphia Phillies in Bal­ti­more on June 16, only to be de­moted the next day.

Chen com­plained on Twit­ter af­ter the as­sign­ment to High-A Fredrick, say­ing that “I am dis­ap­pointed that my rou­tine is be­ing in­ter­rupted. I am in ex­cel­lent phys­i­cal shape. I feel great and I am ready for my next start.”
