Hot weather set to stay through July 1: bureau

The China Post - - LOCAL -

The hot weather Taiwan has seen over the past week is likely to continue into at least July 1 due to a strong Pacific high pressure system and decreasing moisture, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Saturday.

Highs across Taiwan could reach 36 degrees Celsius, the bureau said, adding that Foehn winds — warm and dry gusts that descend the sheltered side of mountains into valleys — could send temperatures soaring even higher in southeastern Taiwan.

Mostly cloudy to sunny skies are expected islandwide, but afternoon thunderstorms could take place in northeastern Taiwan and mountainous parts of northern and central Taiwan, the bureau said.

The heat could ease up from July 2, with highs dropping by 1-2 degrees, the bureau said.
