Van­cou­ver go top of MLS West with win

Van­cou­ver scored two early goals and hung on for a 2-1 win at ten-man New Eng­land on Satur­day to move three points clear at the top of Ma­jor League Soc­cer’s Western Con­fer­ence.

Van­cou­ver, which has now won a league-best six away games this sea­son, grabbed the lead in the 18th minute when New Eng­land goal­keeper Bobby Shut­tle­worth got his gloves to a Cris­tian Techera shot but failed to stop it trick­ling into a cor­ner of the net.

New Eng­land’s An­drew Far­rell com­mit­ted a hard foul in the penalty area in the 31st minute, earn­ing a red card and giv­ing the White­caps a spot kick that Oc­tavio Rivero con­verted to make it 2-0.

Teal Bunbury halved the Van­cou­ver lead in the 84th minute, seiz­ing on a loose ball off a New Eng­land set piece and fir­ing home. Toronto 0, D.C. United 0: Eastern Con­fer­ence leader D. C. United earned a point at Toronto in a match played in re­lent­less rain and high winds.

United keeper Bill Hamid made a div­ing save on a Se­bas­tian Giovinco shot in the 67th minute to deny Toronto’s best chance.

Play­ers had trou­ble putting passes to­gether in the con­di­tions, with wind gusts that had the play­ers’ shorts flap­ping like flags. San Jose 3, Los An­ge­les 1: Chris Won­dolowski scored his ninth goal of the sea­son to help San Jose de­feat Los An­ge­les.

The Gal­axy took the lead in the 17th minute on Jun­inho’s 30-yard rocket that curled out of the reach of div­ing San Jose goal­keeper David Bing­ham.

Ma­tias Perez Gar­cia pro­vided a well-placed cross that Won­dolowski smashed into the net in the 28th minute to level the scores.

Clarence Good­son gave San Jose the lead in the 53rd minute, head­ing home Perez Gar­cia’s cor­ner and Cordell Cato capped the scor­ing for the Earth­quakes with a pa­tient left-footed fin­ish in the 72nd. Real Salt Lake 2, Colum­bus 2: Colum­bus twice came from be­hind to sal­vage a point at Real Salt Lake.

Olmes Gar­cia fin­ished a four­touch buildup off Luke Mul­hol­land’s free kick to open the scor­ing for RSL in the 36th minute but Tony Tchani tied it 6 min­utes later for the Crew.

Se­bas­tian Jaime made it 2-1 for Real Salt Lake only 25 sec­onds into the sec­ond half.

Fed­erico Higuain as­sisted on Ethan Fin­lay’s equal­izer in the 62nd minute with a cross that cut back just be­hind the 6-yard box. Real Salt Lake’s Jor­dan Allen re­ceived a red card in the 77th minute for a studs-up chal­lenge. Sport­ing Kansas City 2, Colorado 0: Krisz­tian Nemeth scored his sev­enth goal of the sea­son as Sport­ing won at home against Colorado.

Chance My­ers and Benny Feil­haber as­sisted on Nemeth’s goal in the 32nd minute. It was Feil­haber’s MLS-lead­ing ninth as­sist, while My­ers was re­turn­ing to the MLS af­ter more than a year out with a rup­tured Achilles ten­don.

Rapids midfielder Sam Cronin con­ceded an own goal in the 64th minute. Philadelphia 2, Mon­treal 2: Mau­rice Edu punched home a re­bound in the 76th minute to give host Philadelphia a draw against Mon­treal in a match played amid a rain­storm.

Af­ter a Philadelphia cor­ner kick, the ball bounced out­side the box and Fabinho fired a shot that goal­keeper Evan Bush stopped but couldn’t con­trol. Edu set­tled the ball and struck it home.
