Mid­dle school stu­dent drowns in Taichung river

A mid­dle school stu­dent drowned yesterday while play­ing with com­pan­ions in a river in Greater Taichung’s Taip­ing Dis­trict.

The Fire Bureau of Taichung City Gov­ern­ment said that at 12: 45 p. m. it was no­ti­fied of a stu­dent who had not come ashore af­ter play­ing with his peers in a lo­cal river.

The bureau dis­patched ve­hi­cles and 12 peo­ple.

At 1: 10 p. m., the boy was re­trieved, how­ever he did not

four dis­play any signs of life.

Although the fire­fight­ers im­me­di­ately per­formed re­sus­ci­ta­tion and sent the boy, sur­named Lai, to Taichung Armed Forces Gen­eral Hos­pi­tal, he was pro­nounced dead af­ter re­ceiv­ing care.

The po­lice said that Lai was a sec­ond- year stu­dent at Dong Shan Ju­nior High School who had gone to the river to play with friends dur­ing sum­mer va­ca­tion. The rea­son be­hind his drown­ing is still un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion.
