Taiwan bestowed a medal on the foreign minister of Sao Tome and Principe Friday in recognition of his efforts to promote exchanges between the two countries and his support for Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that day.

Foreign Minister David Lin conferred the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon upon Manuel Salvador dos Ramos on the last day of a visit to Taiwan that began July 26, the ministry said in a statement.

Taiwan and the African country established diplomatic ties in 1997, and Ramos — an adviser to that country’s president at the time — played a part in the establishment of official ties between the two countries, the ministry said.

Since then, he has been a firm supporter of cooperation between the two countries and bilateral projects aimed at improving public health, education, agriculture, information technology and human resources in Sao Tome and Principe, an island country off the coast of West Africa, the ministry said.

On various international occasions, Ramos has also voiced support for Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly, the International Civil Aviation Organization and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, said the ministry, describing him as a loyal friend of Taiwan.
