Taiwan’s LCD TV shipments down over 8 percent in Q2 year-on-year
Shipments of Taiwan-made liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs fell more than 8 percent in the second quarter from a year earlier as Chinese TV brand Haier cut orders placed to Taiwanese contract makers, according to Taipei-based Digitimes Research.
In a research report, Digitimes Research said that Taiwanese contract maker Compal Electronics Inc. wit- nessed its shipments fall as its clients entered a product transition period.
But, an increase in shipments to South Korean buyer LG Electronics Co. and to China’s Xiaomi lent some support to Taiwanese LCD TV sales in the quarter to some extent, the report said.
In the April-June period, Taiwan’s LCD TV shipments totaled 7.97 million units, down 8.6 per- cent from a year earlier but up 6.6 percent from a quarter earlier, the Digitimes Research data showed.
Looking ahead, Digitimes Research said that growth momentum of Taiwan’s LCD TV shipments could pick up in the third quarter, forecasting that shipments for the third quarter are expected to rise 22.1 percent from the second quarter to 9.71 million units on the back of peak season effects.
Shipments for the fourth quarter could go higher due to a Christmas season buying spree, Digitimes Research said, adding that shipments could rise an additional 4.6 percent from the third quarter to top 10 million units.
Digitimes Research said that Taiwan’s LCD TV shipments for the entire year of 2015 could hit 35.35 million units, down 2.3 percent from a year earlier, to account for about 16 percent of the worldwide total of 221 million shipments.
In a separate report, Digitimes Research said that Taiwan’s LCD monitor shipments for the second quarter reached 19.42 million units, down 10.3 percent from a year earlier due to lingering weakness in the world PC market.
