President happy with the newborn number in 2014
President Ma Ying-jeou expressed his joy Tuesday over a higher-than-expected newborn number last year.
“I’m extremely happy, though they’re not mine,” said Ma, when talking about the newborn number for last year while attending an activity at the Presidential Office for staff and their children.
The number last year was previously expected to be 195,000, but it hit 213,000.
The president said that seeing so many children helped him to recharge and muster more energy to work, and invited them to visit the office whenever they feel like it.
As the birth rate has kept declining over the past several decades, Taiwan is facing a future labor shortage.
