Ex-Ar­gentina en­voy given honorary medal by ROC

Tai­wan be­stowed a medal upon Ar­gentina’s for­mer top rep­re­sen­ta­tive in Tai­wan on Wed­nes­day in recog­ni­tion of his ef­forts to ad­vance re­la­tions be­tween the two coun­tries dur­ing his ten­ure here, the Min­istry of For­eign Af­fairs said.

For­eign Min­is­ter David Lin con­ferred the Friend­ship Medal of Diplo­macy on Juan Pena dur­ing the cer­e­mony held at the For­eign Min­istry’s of­fices in Taipei, ac­cord­ing to a state­ment is­sued by the min­istry.

In his ad­dress, Lin lauded Pena’s ef­forts to strengthen bi­lat­eral ex­changes in the ar­eas of trade, cul­ture, en­vi­ron­men­tal pro­tec­tion and small- and medium-sized en­ter­prises, the state­ment said.

Pena also made ef­forts to stream­line the pro­ce­dure for Tai­wanese na­tion­als to ap­ply for tourism visas to Ar­gentina, Lin said.

His of­fice was cho­sen as an out­stand­ing for­eign trade of­fice in Tai­wan by the Gen­eral Cham­ber of Com­merce of the Re­pub­lic of China in 2010.

Pena took up the post as head of the Ar­gentina Trade and Cul­tural Of­fice in Taipei in July 2009, and he com­pleted his ten­ure as Ar­gentina’s rep­re­sen­ta­tive to Tai­wan on July 23 and was suc­ceeded by Car­los Al­berto Arganaraz, the min­istry said.

In his diplo­matic ca­reer of more than 40 years, Pena has been posted in Den­mark, Ger­many, Ire­land, Hong Kong, Honduras, Uruguay and the United King­dom, the min­istry said.
