Cross-strait drug smuggler ring apprehended by CIB
The Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) recently cracked down on a cross-strait drug smuggling ring by arresting three suspects including its alleged leader, surnamed Fang, in the Greater Taipei region.
The CIB said police authorities seized 3 kilograms of heroin worth up to NT$14 million in a container at Keelung Harbor on July 27 after receiving tips that the ring was about to transport the drugs into Taiwan.
Police later arrested three alleged drug smugglers including individuals surnamed Fang, Chou and Kung on the same day in Taipei and New Taipei cities.
According to the CIB, Fang asked his two accomplices to apply for passports in preparation to smuggle the drugs abroad.
In early June, Chou and Kung went to Laos, hiding heroin in furniture and lamp holders that were later transferred to Guangdong province.
