2,006 schools dam­aged by Typhoon Soude­lor: MOE

A to­tal of 2,006 schools sus­tained dam­age when Typhoon Soude­lor swept through Tai­wan Aug. 8, ac­cord­ing to Min­istry of Ed­u­ca­tion sta­tis­tics re­leased Tues­day.

The dam­age to­taled NT$434 mil­lion (US$13.5 mil­lion) in value, most of which was in­curred in New Taipei, to the tune of NT$66.51 mil­lion, fol­lowed by NT$62.22 mil­lion in Taichung and NT$54.97 mil­lion in Kaoh­si­ung, the tal­lies show.

Three schools in Yi­lan County, New Taipei and Kaoh­si­ung, re­spec­tively, re­mained closed Tues­day be­cause of typhoon dam­age, the min­istry said.

Tai­wan was bat­tered by tor­ren­tial rain and strong wind caused by the typhoon Satur­day. As of Tues­day, eight deaths had been re­ported, with four peo­ple miss­ing and 420 in­jured across Tai­wan, along with mas­sive agri­cul­tural losses to an es­ti­mated value of nearly NT$2.3 bil­lion.
