Po­lice nab 12 Bam­boo Union gang­sters on ex­tor­tion charges

Taipei po­lice author­i­ties re­cently ar­rested 12 gang­sters be­long­ing to the Bam­boo Union ( ), one of the ma­jor or­ga­nized crime gangs in Tai­wan, over ex­tor­tion charges, the Crim­i­nal In­ves­ti­ga­tion Bureau (CIB) has an­nounced.

Ac­cord­ing to a CIB state­ment, the 12 gang­sters, in­clud­ing the gang’s ring­leader sur­named Lu ( ), op­er­ated in the Greater Taipei area where they are sus­pected of com­mit­ting ex­tor­tion on sev­eral oc­ca­sions over the years.

The gang has been in­volved in gravel truck busi­nesses in North­ern Tai­wan for some time and its trucks were re­spon­si­ble for trans­port­ing gravel to and from ma­jor con­struc­tion sites in Taipei and New Taipei cities, the CIB said.

The gang also al­legedly took part in pro­tec­tion racket schemes for sev­eral lo­cal con­struc­tion com­pa­nies.

The gang has been in­volved in vi­o­lent at­tacks on some oc­ca­sions when whistle­blow­ers called the en­vi­ron­men­tal pro­tec­tion author­i­ties to re­port their trucks of dump­ing gravel in re­stricted ar­eas, it said.
