Police nab 12 Bamboo Union gangsters on extortion charges
Taipei police authorities recently arrested 12 gangsters belonging to the Bamboo Union ( ), one of the major organized crime gangs in Taiwan, over extortion charges, the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) has announced.
According to a CIB statement, the 12 gangsters, including the gang’s ringleader surnamed Lu ( ), operated in the Greater Taipei area where they are suspected of committing extortion on several occasions over the years.
The gang has been involved in gravel truck businesses in Northern Taiwan for some time and its trucks were responsible for transporting gravel to and from major construction sites in Taipei and New Taipei cities, the CIB said.
The gang also allegedly took part in protection racket schemes for several local construction companies.
The gang has been involved in violent attacks on some occasions when whistleblowers called the environmental protection authorities to report their trucks of dumping gravel in restricted areas, it said.
