US official praises ROC environmental initiative

The China Post - - LOCAL -

Wei Kuo-yen ( ), visiting head of Taiwan's Environmental Protection Administration, visited his U.S. counterpart Gina McCarthy Tuesday, who lauded a Taiwanlaunched environmental initiative during their meeting.

McCarthy praised the results of the International Environmental Partnership (IEP), a program launched last year with the aim of sharing experience and technology in environmental protection, citing the examples of mercury monitoring, electronic waste management, city air quality and soil pollution management.

She noted that Taiwan's contribution to environmental protection has not only benefited Asian and North American countries, but has also benefited Latin America and Africa.

Wei for his part expressed appreciation to the United States for continuing to play the role of a solid partner, noting that since the launch of the IEP, nearly 30 countries have taken part in about 30 seminars, workshops and training camps.

Wei took part in the first conference of the IEP program in Washington Aug. 10.

The launch of the IEP initiative was witnessed by President Ma Ying-jeou ( ) and McCarthy, when the latter visited Taiwan in April 2014.
