Int’l so­cial en­ter­prise con­fer­ence to launch, start­ing first in Tainan

The Min­istry of La­bor (MOL) will kick off an in­ter­na­tional con­fer­ence in Au­gust to pro­mote the de­vel­op­ment of so­cial en­ter­prises in Tai­wan and in­spire lo­cal busi­nesses to in­no­vate, the min­istry said Mon­day.

The So­cial En­ter­prise In­ter­na­tional Con­fer­ence will open Aug. 28 in South­ern Tai­wan’s Tainan. It will fea­ture 25 talks by speak­ers from Tai­wan and abroad, and will run un­til Oct. 24 in var­i­ous cities around Tai­wan.

Among the speak­ers are Elena Car­mag­nani, founder of Or­tiAlti, which trans­forms flat roofs into planted green roofs, and De Pas­cale Fabio, co-founder and CEO of Dev­ergy, an energy ser­vices com­pany that pro­vides af­ford­able elec­tric­ity to low- in­come peo­ple in de­vel­op­ing coun­tries.

Mike Curtin, CEO of DC Cen­tral Kitchen, which turns leftover and sur­plus food into thou­sands of meals for the hun­gry ev­ery day, and Nam­rata Bali, a rep­re­sen­ta­tive of the Self Em­ployed Women’s As­so­ci­a­tion, a trade union that as­sists poor and self­em­ployed women work­ers in In­dia, will also be among the speak­ers.

The talks will ad­dress so­cial en­ter­prise in­cu­ba­tion and the themes of so­cial im­pact, in­vest­ment and in­no­va­tion, with the hope that they will “im­prove the op­er­a­tion and ex­pand the in­ter­na­tional per­spec­tives of Tai­wan’s so­cial en­ter­prises,” MOL said in a state­ment.
