Heavy rainfall warning is issued for entire country
The Central Weather Bureau on Monday issued a warning for heavy rainfall in most parts of Taiwan, cautioning of downpours that could accumulate up to 50 millimeters of rainfall in the next 24 hours due to the outer rim of Typhoon Goni.
Rains could be the most pronounced in the west of Taiwan proper and mountainous areas in Yilan and Hualien counties in eastern Taiwan, the bureau said.
Besides heavy rainfall, there could be gusty winds brought by Goni, which is in the waters northeast of Taiwan moving toward Japan Monday morning, forecasters said.
All administrative areas, except for Taitung County in the southeast and outlying Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu counties, are covered by the torrential rain alert.
As of 2 a.m. Monday, Goni was centered 310 kilometers east of Taipei, moving at a speed of 29 kilometers per hour in a northeasterly direction.
With a radius of 150 kilometers, the storm was carrying maximum sustained winds of 155 kph, with gusts of up to 191 kph, bureau data showed.
