Heavy rain­fall warn­ing is is­sued for en­tire coun­try

The Cen­tral Weather Bureau on Mon­day is­sued a warn­ing for heavy rain­fall in most parts of Tai­wan, cau­tion­ing of down­pours that could ac­cu­mu­late up to 50 mil­lime­ters of rain­fall in the next 24 hours due to the outer rim of Typhoon Goni.

Rains could be the most pro­nounced in the west of Tai­wan proper and moun­tain­ous ar­eas in Yi­lan and Hualien coun­ties in eastern Tai­wan, the bureau said.

Be­sides heavy rain­fall, there could be gusty winds brought by Goni, which is in the wa­ters north­east of Tai­wan mov­ing to­ward Ja­pan Mon­day morn­ing, fore­cast­ers said.

All ad­min­is­tra­tive ar­eas, ex­cept for Taitung County in the south­east and out­ly­ing Penghu, Kin­men and Matsu coun­ties, are cov­ered by the tor­ren­tial rain alert.

As of 2 a.m. Mon­day, Goni was cen­tered 310 kilo­me­ters east of Taipei, mov­ing at a speed of 29 kilo­me­ters per hour in a north­east­erly di­rec­tion.

With a ra­dius of 150 kilo­me­ters, the storm was car­ry­ing max­i­mum sus­tained winds of 155 kph, with gusts of up to 191 kph, bureau data showed.
