Foun­da­tion seeks to lure tourists with live theater

A lo­cal foun­da­tion said re­cently it will launch a unique show that com­prises per­for­mances by tra­di­tional groups and pop stars, to pro­mote Tai­wanese cul­ture and at­tract for­eign tourists.

The pro­duc­tion, named “The Stars,” is based on the leg­end of the Qixi Fes­ti­val — the Chi­nese ver­sion of Valen­tine’s Day.

It will be staged Sept. 5 at Sun Yat-sen Me­mo­rial Hall in Taipei, said the iSee Tai­wan Foun­da­tion.

A to­tal of six per­for­mance groups, in­clud­ing the TenDrum Cul­tural Cre­ative Group, Di­abolo Dance Theatre and Lan Yan Dancers, will come to­gether to tell the love story of a Tai­wanese abo­rig­i­nal woman and an Amer­i­can man.

Tai­wanese pop stars Liang Yi cheng and Coke Li will play the main char­ac­ters, giv­ing the show a fresh young look, the foun­da­tion said.

“We hope the theater per­for­mance will be a fu­sion of arts that in­te­grates dif­fer­ent el­e­ments of Tai­wanese cul­ture,” said the foun­da­tion’s chair­woman Au­drey Yang.

The 90 minute show will also seek feed­back from the au­di­ence of some 2,500 in­vited guests, in­clud­ing 300 for­eign na­tion­als, and will make ad­just­ments based on their re­sponses, in the hope of mak­ing it a sus­tain­able and prof­itable pro­gram to at­tract for­eign tourists, she said.

Yang said she also hopes the show will help en­cour­age dif­fer­ent artis­tic groups to work more closely to­gether.
