Tainan reports more than 2,000 dengue fever cases
The Tainan City Government reported more than 2,000 dengue fever cases in the southern Taiwan city on Wednesday.
With the 178 new cases reported on Tuesday, Tainan has now reached a total of 2,152 cases since the beginning of summer. The most serious region was Tainan’s North District, which was reported up to 1,032 cases.
Dengue fever has claimed the lives of four people so far this year — all in Tainan. Most of whom were elders and suffered from other chronic illnesses.
The national Center for Disease Control (CDC) said Tuesday in a weekly report that most of the dengue fever cases in Tainan had been indigenous, though there have been some imported cases from Southeast Asian countries.
Since early August, this mosquito- borne disease has been escalating, especially in the Tainan area.
