Asustek tops big-screen phone market in Philippines
Taiwan's Asustek Computer Inc. took the lead in the Philippines' big-screen phone market during the second quarter of 2015 thanks to the launch of its 5.5-inch ZenFone 2 smartphone in April.
Citing data compiled by research firm International Data Corp. (IDC), Asustek said in a statement on Saturday that it topped the Philippines market in mid-tier and high-end smart- phones with a 5.5-inch or larger screen in the April-June quarter, without giving its market share or shipments.
Asustek noted that the Philippines has become one of its key markets since 2014 as the company's first and second generation ZenFone models have topped the Google Trends search volume index there, outperforming other famous phone brands such as Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co.
To make a further push into the Southeast Asian market, Asustek held the ZenFestival in Manila on Saturday to release four new ZenFone variants — the premium ZenFone 2 Deluxe, the selfie-centric ZenFone Selfie, the ZenFone Laser with a laser auto-focus feature and the ZenFone Max that carries a whopping 5000mAh battery.
Woody Oh, a director for handset country share tracking at the research firm Strategy Analyt- ics, said earlier this month that Asustek captured the third-largest smartphone vendor position in Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam in the second quarter of 2015.
The results were largely boosted by Asustek's highly price-competitive ZenFone range, relatively well-known brand awareness and more focus on open and online distribution channels, Oh said on the research company's official blog.
