Taiex closes significantly higher at 8,295.94
Shares in Taiwan ended significantly higher Thursday, driven mainly by the electronics and financial sectors, dealers said.
The weighted index on the Taiwan Stock Exchange ended up 114.7 points, or 1.4 percent, at 8,295.94, after moving between 8,170.78 and 8,317.79. Turnover totaled NT$87.62 billion ( US$2.68 billion) during the session.
The gains were led by electronics and financial stocks, which rose 1.48 percent and 0.87 percent, respectively.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. ( ), the most heavily weighted stock on the local market, soared 2.69 percent to end at NT$133.5; MediaTek Inc. ( ) climbed 2.87 percent to NT$250.5; Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. ( ) gained 1.98 percent to finish at NT$36; and Inotera Memories Inc. ( ) closed up 3.65 percent at NT$21.3.
Largan Precision Co. ( ), the most expensive stock on the local market, however, fell 3.5 percent to finish at NT$2,470.
In the financial sector, Cathay Financial Holding Co. ( ) ended up 0.67 percent at NT$45.25, Fubon Financial Holding Co. ( ) climbed 2.34 percent at NT$52.5, and CTBC Financial Holding Co. ( ) gained 0.88 percent at NT$17.1.
sector, shipping stocks gained 4 percent, plastics stocks 1.9 percent, cement stocks 1.5 percent and automobile stocks 2.6 percent.
Foreign institutional investors bought a net NT$3.24 billion worth of local shares Thursday.
US Dollar Closes Lower on Taipei Forex to NT$33.080
The U.S. dollar fell against the New Taiwan dollar Wednesday, shedding NT$0.048 to close at NT$33.080.
Turnover totaled US$735 million during the trading session.
The greenback opened at NT$33.128, and moved between NT$32.700 and NT$33.135 before the close.
