Taiex closes sig­nif­i­cantly higher at 8,295.94

Shares in Tai­wan ended sig­nif­i­cantly higher Thurs­day, driven mainly by the elec­tron­ics and fi­nan­cial sec­tors, deal­ers said.

The weighted in­dex on the Tai­wan Stock Ex­change ended up 114.7 points, or 1.4 per­cent, at 8,295.94, af­ter mov­ing be­tween 8,170.78 and 8,317.79. Turnover to­taled NT$87.62 bil­lion ( US$2.68 bil­lion) dur­ing the ses­sion.

The gains were led by elec­tron­ics and fi­nan­cial stocks, which rose 1.48 per­cent and 0.87 per­cent, re­spec­tively.

Tai­wan Semi­con­duc­tor Man­u­fac­tur­ing Co. ( ), the most heav­ily weighted stock on the lo­cal mar­ket, soared 2.69 per­cent to end at NT$133.5; Me­di­aTek Inc. ( ) climbed 2.87 per­cent to NT$250.5; Ad­vanced Semi­con­duc­tor En­gi­neer­ing Inc. ( ) gained 1.98 per­cent to fin­ish at NT$36; and Inotera Mem­o­ries Inc. ( ) closed up 3.65 per­cent at NT$21.3.

Lar­gan Pre­ci­sion Co. ( ), the most ex­pen­sive stock on the lo­cal mar­ket, how­ever, fell 3.5 per­cent to fin­ish at NT$2,470.

In the fi­nan­cial sec­tor, Cathay Fi­nan­cial Hold­ing Co. ( ) ended up 0.67 per­cent at NT$45.25, Fubon Fi­nan­cial Hold­ing Co. ( ) climbed 2.34 per­cent at NT$52.5, and CTBC Fi­nan­cial Hold­ing Co. ( ) gained 0.88 per­cent at NT$17.1.

In the

old- econ­omy

sec­tor, ship­ping stocks gained 4 per­cent, plas­tics stocks 1.9 per­cent, ce­ment stocks 1.5 per­cent and au­to­mo­bile stocks 2.6 per­cent.

For­eign in­sti­tu­tional in­vestors bought a net NT$3.24 bil­lion worth of lo­cal shares Thurs­day.

US Dol­lar Closes Lower on Taipei Forex to NT$33.080

The U.S. dol­lar fell against the New Tai­wan dol­lar Wed­nes­day, shed­ding NT$0.048 to close at NT$33.080.

Turnover to­taled US$735 mil­lion dur­ing the trad­ing ses­sion.

The green­back opened at NT$33.128, and moved be­tween NT$32.700 and NT$33.135 be­fore the close.
