MAC min­is­ter to re­view is­sues with his main­land coun­ter­part

Main­land Af­fairs Coun­cil ( MAC,

) Min­is­ter Hsia Li-yan ( ) said Thurs­day that he and his main­land Chi­nese coun­ter­part will look into mat­ters re­lated to cross-Tai­wan Strait ne­go­ti­a­tions dur­ing their next meet­ing in China later this month.

Hsia told leg­is­la­tors that he is sched­uled to meet with Zhang Zhi­jun ( ), min­is­ter of China’s Tai­wan Af­fairs Of­fice, in Guangzhou Oct. 13.

He said he will also visit Dong­guan dur­ing his visit to China, which will take place Oct. 13-15.

He said that ev­ery time the chiefs of cross-Tai­wan Strait af­fairs from the two sides meet each other, they dis­cuss the over­all de­vel­op­ment of cross-strait re­la­tions in re­cent months and also ex­plore on­go­ing is­sues cov­ered in cross-strait ne­go­ti­a­tions.

Is­sues that will be in­cluded this time are pro­posed agree­ments on trade in goods and dis­pute set­tle­ment, the es­tab­lish­ment of re­spec­tive rep­re­sen­ta­tive of­fices and co­op­er­a­tion on en­vi­ron­men­tal pro­tec­tion, he said. The two sides will also dis­cuss what other is­sues can be in­cluded in fu­ture ne­go­ti­a­tions, he added.

In ad­di­tion to hold­ing talks with Zhang, Hsia said he will use the op­por­tu­nity of the trip to visit some his­toric sites, call on Tai­wanese cit­i­zens study­ing or do­ing busi­ness in Guang­dong, and meet with lo­cal of­fi­cials there.

It will be Hsia’s sec­ond meet­ing with Zhang since he be­came Tai­wan’s top of­fi­cial re­spon­si­ble for cross-strait re­la­tions in Fe­bru­ary. The two last met in Kin­men in late May.
