MAC minister to review issues with his mainland counterpart
Mainland Affairs Council ( MAC,
) Minister Hsia Li-yan ( ) said Thursday that he and his mainland Chinese counterpart will look into matters related to cross-Taiwan Strait negotiations during their next meeting in China later this month.
Hsia told legislators that he is scheduled to meet with Zhang Zhijun ( ), minister of China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, in Guangzhou Oct. 13.
He said he will also visit Dongguan during his visit to China, which will take place Oct. 13-15.
He said that every time the chiefs of cross-Taiwan Strait affairs from the two sides meet each other, they discuss the overall development of cross-strait relations in recent months and also explore ongoing issues covered in cross-strait negotiations.
Issues that will be included this time are proposed agreements on trade in goods and dispute settlement, the establishment of respective representative offices and cooperation on environmental protection, he said. The two sides will also discuss what other issues can be included in future negotiations, he added.
In addition to holding talks with Zhang, Hsia said he will use the opportunity of the trip to visit some historic sites, call on Taiwanese citizens studying or doing business in Guangdong, and meet with local officials there.
It will be Hsia’s second meeting with Zhang since he became Taiwan’s top official responsible for cross-strait relations in February. The two last met in Kinmen in late May.
