Min­is­ter stays on af­ter his of­fer to re­sign is re­jected

Min­is­ter of Cul­ture Hung Meng-chi said Fri­day he has de­cided to re­main in his post at the re­quest of Premier Mao Chi kuo.

Hung ten­dered his res­ig­na­tion Wed­nes­day af­ter Next Mag­a­zine re­ported that the Min­istry of Cul­ture had of­fered to pay rul­ing Kuom­intang law­mak­ers on the Leg­isla­tive Ed­u­ca­tion and Cul­ture Com­mit­tee NT$ 2.5 mil­lion (US$76,000) each to help se­cure pas­sage of a bud­get pro­posal.

Hung has dis­missed the re­port as un­founded and said Fri­day that his min­istry was in­ves­ti­gat­ing any pos­si­ble leaks of gov­ern­ment files to the mag­a­zine.

The min­istry will also ex­am­ine whether its sub­sidy pro­grams are com­pli­ant with the law, he said.

If any im­proper prac­tices are dis­cov­ered, Hung said, he will take full re­spon­si­bil­ity.
