Minister stays on after his offer to resign is rejected
Minister of Culture Hung Meng-chi said Friday he has decided to remain in his post at the request of Premier Mao Chi kuo.
Hung tendered his resignation Wednesday after Next Magazine reported that the Ministry of Culture had offered to pay ruling Kuomintang lawmakers on the Legislative Education and Culture Committee NT$ 2.5 million (US$76,000) each to help secure passage of a budget proposal.
Hung has dismissed the report as unfounded and said Friday that his ministry was investigating any possible leaks of government files to the magazine.
The ministry will also examine whether its subsidy programs are compliant with the law, he said.
If any improper practices are discovered, Hung said, he will take full responsibility.
