Foreign Ministry offers its congrats on the TPP deal

The China Post - - LOCAL -

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs commended Trans-Pacific Partnership ( TPP) members for reaching a groundbreaking agreement last night and reiterated Taiwan’s desire to join the economic bloc.

The Republic of China is expressing its view as an important player in the Asia Pacific region and a APEC member like the 12 countries partaking in the TPP talk held in Atlanta, the U.S., the ministry said.

The new agreement is likely to promote wide and deep economic integration in the Asia Pacific region and at the same time boosting trade.

President Ma Ying-jeou has pressed the need for Taiwan to join the TPP as early as possible. To increase Taiwan’s chances, the government has launched measures in order to enhance Taiwan’s free trade environment.

The ministry has repeatedly voiced Taiwan’s intention to the 12 TPP member countries and its desire to participate in the next round of negotiation.

The U.S. State Department is reportedly seriously considering Taiwan’s membership.
