HOW DO KIDS BENEFIT FROM YOGA
The first question most people ask is What is Yoga? In simple terms, yoga (meaning union) is a practice that is accessible for all and integrates us in the universe by connecting the mind, body and spirit in the purist of inner harmony and peace.
Recently we have seen a trend of yoga becoming popular amongst adults as well as with children. A number of studies have been done and have shown how yoga benefits children. As children we encounter greater emotional, social, and physical challenges or conflicts during the younger years and the development stages. Therefore, to have a dedicated and intentional yoga practice that includes breathing techniques, behavioral guidelines, and physical postures is advised for all children.
Representative of Yoga for Wellness Tanzania, Jabeen Bandali has been able to seen noticeable results in children who have been attending regular children’s yoga session at Yoga for Wellness Tanzania. She further continues to explain how breathing techniques, concentration/meditation and the poses, has led to children being more focused and inquisitive. The article ‘More than just a game: Yoga for school-age children’ by Marlynn Wei, MD, JD, speak about how yoga “improves balance, strength and endurance in children. Yoga and mindfulness offer psychological, can improve focus, memory, self-esteem, academic performance, and classroom behavior, and can even reduce anxiety in children”. Children today need to know how to manage stress and balance life more so than ever. Through regular yoga our future generations are being molded in being confident, independent, compassionate human beings while managing stress and decreasing stress related health issues.
