‘Govt should stop over­tax­ing dairy sec­tor’

THE Tan­za­nia Di­ary Board (TDB) has de­cried the ex­is­tence of many in­sti­tu­tions deal­ing in milk pro­duc­tion as it hin­ders ef­fec­tive growth in the dairy sub-sec­tor.

Speak­ing dur­ing a sem­i­nar or­ga­nized for milk pro­ces­sors re­cently, the Act­ing Regis­trar of the TDB, Nel­son Ki­lon­gozi, said the dairy sub-sec­tor is be­ing man­aged by many in­sti­tu­tions with each hav­ing its own charges.

He said the sec­tor is still at its nas­cent age, not­ing how­ever, that TDB is cur­rently ini­ti­at­ing de­vel­op­ment strate­gies that seek to mod­ern­ize and com­mer­cial­ize it.

“Milk pro­duc­tion has in­creased to 2.4 bil­lion litres but the ex­is­tence of many in­sti­tu­tions man­ag­ing the pro­duc­tion is killing the mar­ket.
