Opposition attacks Bujumbura bases

BUJUMBURA: An armed opposition group attacked army bases in Burundi’s capital, Bujumbura, the presidency said after gunfire and explosions killed dozens. “The Sindumuja tried to attack military camps but they failed,” Willy Nyamitwe, a spokesman for President Pierre Nkurunziza, said. “The goal of the Sindumuja was to release prisoners in Mpimba [prison].” The attackers targeted two military camps in the south and north of Bujumbura. The country’s Council of Ministers had an emergency meeting yesterday morning to discuss the attacks that began at about 4am (9am Thai time), according to resident Claude Nahimana. SOS Medias Burundi said at one camp, two military personnel and five assailants died.
