THE SETTING

Stepping inside the small, homey restaurant makes you feel as if you’ve left Thailand and entered a diner somewhere in America. It’s not just because of the feel of the restaurant and the food. The owner, Katherine, is Thai-American and is very much hands-on with her customers, making them feel welcome and right at home and going around and checking up on them as they eat. We think that makes all the difference in terms of service and atmosphere because it was nice to have a mother-like figure asking you if you’re doing okay and checking if you’re still breathing after eating so much. Despite the somewhat small space, the restaurant welcomes regulars who come in every week. We think this is because of the welcoming atmosphere, thanks to Katherine and her staff, and of course, the homemade American meal its patrons feast on.

THE MENU

Take a glance at City Skyline’s menu and you’ll realise you’re in for a legit American meal. And it’s not just because it offers staple American dishes like mac and cheese, sandwiches and burgers. It’s also because the meals come in American portions. That’s right; forget measly Asian-sized dishes. You’re getting a full-on American meal here.

We decided to start off with a classic American breakfast dish that we haven’t seen anywhere else as of yet: Biscuits and gravy (B105). Don’t underestimate this dish and think that it won’t be enough to get you full, because that’s what we did and we were sorely yet delightfully mistaken. The biscuits are huge (Trump pun definitely intended). But the best part of it is the fact that it’s smothered in gravy, and when we say smothered, we mean smothered. Not one part of the biscuits was left uncovered with gravy. You can also get it with eggs (B175).

No restaurant can claim it serves American food without burgers, and City Skyline definitely has its bases covered in that department. You can go for the aptly named Plain ol’ burger (B255) or the Phuket burger (B315) which uses Phuket pineapples to give you a bit of Thainess. However, we were recommended the Cowboy Burger (B355), a wonderful concoction of a beef patty topped with cheese, bacon, and BBQ sauce. But it doesn’t end there. It comes with onion rings, and not served on the side; it comes inside the burger so there’s that crunchyjuicy combo going on.

If red meat is your thing and you want to satisfy your carnivorous cravings, there’s two ways we suggest you can go. The Country fried steak (B255) is for those of you who not only want your steak, well, fried, but also for those who can’t get enough of that gravy goodness. Yes, this steak was fried and covered with gravy all throughout. Now stop drooling. You can also get the Baby back ribs (from B375). The menu confidently claims they’re “fall-off-the-bone ribs”. They’re not lying.

But as much as we love the burgers, steaks, and the gravy overload, there were two standout dishes that you definitely have to try. The first was the Mac and cheese (B295), another staple of any American resto, and City Skyline’s version of the dish is nothing short of cheesy goodness. Like any classic mac and cheese, it was topped off with breadcrumbs for added crunchiness and the cheesy flavour hit you as soon as you put it in your mouth. You can have it à la carte or have it as a side dish, but if those aren’t enough, do not be dismayed. You can have the Loaded mac and cheese (B395). Why “loaded”, you ask? It was topped off with pulled pork. Second is the Philly cheesesteak sandwich (B355). The juicy-crunchy combo made a comeback with the help of the sliced beef and the bell peppers and onions. But what makes this a standout dish? The cheese, of course. And it’s a telling sign that both standout dishes are cheesy.

Your American meal won’t be complete without a proper American dessert. Therefore, to top it all off, have a classic Apple pie (B155). It was tangy, sweet, and a great way to balance out all that cheese and gravy.

INSIDER’S TIP

Protip: don’t get the Mac and cheese as your side dish when ordering the Philly cheesesteak unless you want to experience a cheese overload. A great side dish to order is the onion rings or hashbrowns, which pretty much go well with any dish you’ll order. A great combination is the Baby back ribs with Mac and cheese on the side. And for you breakfast lovers out there, they serve it all day, so you can get biscuits and gravy with eggs any time of the day.

VALUE AND VERDICT

The prices? Reasonable. The portions? American, AKA huge. The food? Delicious. We’ve been looking for a great American comfort food resto and we’re glad we’ve found one.
