LUXE City Guides - Chiang Mai - - Shopping Itineraries -

CM’S funkiest cluster of shops starts with rather irksome construction at the top of Nimmanhaemin (cnr Huay Kaew), but swing into Soi 1, to find on your right mod furnishing at Am Home / 091 071 9770 (grab the handy Nimmanhaemin Road Lifestyle Map), and Paothong’s at #4 / 053 217 715 / closed Mon / for Chinese-style silk clothing and antique furny. Continue along to Koland / 053 214 715 / for a museum of Mao inspired objets d’art and Wit’s Collection (see Standout Stores). Then across the soi you’ll find Adorn With Studio Naenna at #22 / 053 895 136 / studio-naenna.com / for hand woven cotton clothing and eco-textiles, finishing near the end with homeware at #30 Gongdee Gallery / 053 225 032 / gongdeegallery.com. From here, turn right down the short connecting alley to Soi 3 where you’ll find Wit’s Collection 2 right across the soi, and further up is the flagship Gerard Collection (see Adv. Shopping). So, now you’re back on the main road. Thirsty or famished? Options: For Northern Thai treats cross Nimman and bear right for the comfy air-conned Hong Tauw Inn (see Lunch) at #95/17-18 or, bear left and find juicy dim sum on Soi 5 at #10 Yangzi Jiang. For coffee n’ latte-art aficionados don’t miss Ristr8to (see Coffee) or, for the sweet toothed seek out the exotic cakes and ice cream at Mont Blanc / 053 222 992 / on the corner of Soi 7. If not, head left out of Soi 3, past Soi 5 and cross over to mini-mall Nimman Promenade on Soi 4 to find a jolly blast of colour at Chabaa at #14/32 / 053 221 824 / atchabaa.com / with hippie-chic ethnic tunics and jewellery, and The Dolls House / 053 221 028 / thedollshouse-shop.com / funky dresses off the rack or MTO. Go inside the mall for Boho Rhapsody / 081 167 6768 / bright poolside dresses for pretty young things; Lily Field for trad and contempo casj clothing in veggy dyed cotton and silk; and Maneesilp / 053 289 252 / msmfootwear.com / made-to-measure and ready-to-wear men’s and women’s cobbler. Out onto Nimman again, head left and in the block opp. Soi 1 look into Gerard Collection shop 2 for more bamboo furniture and bags made from water hyacinth; Classic Model at #6/22 / 053 216 810 / for RTW and made to order women’s cotton and silk fashion; and Ginger (see Standout Stores) at #6/21 for shopping excess. Carry on and potter past Hong Taew Inn to find charitable Doi Tung Lifestyle / 053 217 983 / doitung.org / for refreshments, ceramics, clothing, rugs and cotton bags with a charitable cause. Back where you started, sharp shopper. Howzat!
