American University Of Myanmar, Inc.

The American University of Myanmar (“AUM”) is a greenfield project to establish Myanmar’s first private non- profit university modelled on the American style of higher education with a liberal arts core and a governance structure headed by an independent Board of Trustees.

Market demand for higher education in Myanmar is excellent due to Myanmar’s growing economy and the insufficient lack of opportunities for in- person uni- versity study ( the government’s most recent statistics reveal only 55,857 undergraduate places per year for a population in excess of 50 million).

In October 2014, legislation passed the Myanmar Parliament and was signed into law permitting the establishment of the University. The University was incorporated in Delaware in November 2014 as a non- profit institution, has secured approval from the US Department of Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control to operate in Myanmar and has obtained tax exempt status pursuant to § 501( C)( 3) of the IRS Code. Improving the quality of public education is a high priority of the new government. The challenges are so great, however, that it is likely to take generations before any significant impact is realized. AUM is uniquely- positioned to fill the gap and educate the people needed to develop Myanmar to its potential.
