Dear AMCHAM Members,
October 13, 2016 marked a day in Thai history that will be remembered by all those in Thailand and many around the world, as we sadly said farewell to the longest reigning monarch in modern history, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. His Majesty holds a special place in the hearts and history of America due to his birth in Cambridge, Massachusetts, while his father was studying public health at Harvard and his mother was studying nursing at Simmons College. In 1990 a public square in Cambridge was dedicated to him in honor and remembrance of the long- standing ties between the people of Thailand and America. The tributes and praises for His Majesty have continued to flow into the country from leaders around the world who reiterate His Majesty’s devotion to Thailand and the people of his land. In this edition of T- AB Magazine we have provided a short history of His Majesties’ visits to the U. S. and their interactions with prominent American public figures with a selection of historical pictures so we can remember the deep bonds between our two nations. This edition of T- AB Magazine also focuses on the importance of the Trans- Pacific Partnership ( TPP) and we have included a number of articles, editorials and letters outlining why this global free trade agreement is so important to U. S. business in the Asia- Pacific region. The Asia Pacific Council of American Chambers of Commerce ( APCAC) recently released the results of a survey showing strong support for TPP among American business leaders in the Asia- Pacific region with nearly 90% supporting the agreement and 70% stating that U. S. economic and security interests will be damaged if TPP fails. You can read the reasons why within and we encourage you ( as U. S. citizens) to write and urge your representative in Congress to vote to pass TPP once it is brought forth for a vote. At the Annual General Meeting on October 19, the membership elected the new Governors for the 2017- 2018 term on the Board and I offer my congratulations to all of them. They included: Ornkanya Pibuldham ( Mook), Bank of America Merrill Lynch; James Anatavivadhana, Minor Retail Group; Wail A. Farghaly, GM Thailand & Chevrolet Sales Thailand; Steve D. Rich, Caterpillar Inc.; Vira- anong Chiranakhorn Phutrakul, Citibank N. A.; and Jeffrey D. Nygaard, Seagate Technology. I am honored to have also been voted onto the Board for two more years. I also wish to thank the Election Supervision Committee consisting of AMCHAM Governor Parnsiree Amatayakul, IBM; Suripong Tantiyanon, Visa International; Richard Jackson, RLC Recruitment; Peggy Creveling, Creveling & Creveling Wealth Advisory; and Greg Boudah, Spokes Jewelry Services for overseeing the election and ballot counting process to ensure that it was transparent and fair.
