SFS Aviation is one of Thailand’s leading offshore helicopter operators. Founded in 1990 as Thailand’s first onshore operator, the company expanded into supporting Thailand’s offshore oil and gas activities in 2005.

During the founding years, SFS acquired technical support from NORSK Helikopter ( now Bristow Norway), one of the best helicopter operators in the North Sea. SFS have been independent from NORSK Helikopter, since 2007.

SFS operates and maintains a modern fleet of helicopters comprising of Sikorsky S- 76 and Leonardo Agustawestland AW139S. Since its inception SFS has maintained an exemplary 100% operational safety record and their Safety Management System ( SMS) is seen as a leading benchmark to other operators.

The key to success in the aviation industry, especially in the oil and gas support sector, is to focus on modifying processes and research capabilities in order to improve efficiency while reducing risk. This process has been defined and redefined in a never- ending cycle at SFS Aviation. It is a culture that has been inculcated by SFS management that understands the elements of trust and efficiency and how a happy workforce supports the successful implementation of safety standards.

Tisanu Ratanarat, CEO & Accountable Manager at SFS Aviation, says “My priority is to continue the refinement of our in- house Aviation Safety Management System. We have integrated the system to incorporate all flight operations and maintenance protocol required in the offshore oil and gas aviation sector, which is the most demanding segment in the aviation industry.”

To properly understand the DNA of SFS Aviation one must first look at SFSS’ corporate colors: red, yellow and black. Both the founder, Dr. Chira Rataranat and his father, Dr. Chang, studied and worked in Germany’s leading educational institutions and industrial companies such as Stuttgart University, Bosch and Mercedes Benz. It is this fearlessness and dedication to pioneering innovation in the German industrial sector that they brought back to Thailand to help build the nation.

In addressing the current struggles in the offshore helicopter market, CEO Tisanu Ratanarat says, “All of us are trying to survive this ‘ great down- turn’ in our own ways. But we hope that despite the cost- conscious environment, all of us can continue to stay true to our mottos and our essential safety policies. In fact, with a slow market and reduced activities, there is no better time than now to look inward and see how we can improve our standardized processes. It is an opportunity to enhance our services so that when the market turns up again, our industries will be even safer than they are today.”

SFS Aviation in Thailand is one of the most passionate operators to be found in the helicopter industry, founded on a safety culture that has not only won it countless accolades, but also provides an excellent model for how newcomers to the industry might succeed, even in a market as tough as today’s.
