UKRAINE Ambassador to Ankara Andrii Sybiha hosted a reception for the 26th Anniversary of the Independence of Ukraine on Sept. 14, with the attendance of Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli, ambassadors, diplomats and members of the press.

Speaking at the reception, Canikli congratulated the nation on Ukraine’s Independence Day. “As I had the chance to attend the ceremonies in Ukraine in the framework of a celebration of independence, I witnessed the Ukraine nation’s love of independence and their resolution to maintain it,” the minister said.

Canikli underlined that friendly relations between Ukraine and Turkey dates back centuries. “There has been a profound relation. During the Cold War period, there was an artificial division between some communities; however, in the aftermath of the Cold War, all of these hurdles were displaced. The nations of Turkey and Ukraine have loved each other. The increasing number of Ukrainians visiting Turkey has been the best reflection of this,” he added.

Touching upon the situation of Crimean Tatars, which is a common issue for both countries, Canikli stated that Turkey would continue to support the struggle of Crimean Turks.

Ambassador Sybiha stated that they have been undergoing difficult times as a country. He added that since the war started with Russia, Ukraine has lost nearly 7 percent of its lands and 20 percent of its industrial capacity.

Sybiha also said that he celebrates the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations with Turkey along with Ukraine’s national day. “We are 120 million together, and this makes us strong,” the ambassador added. Sybiha said that Turkey is key ally in the Black Sea region and a natural strategic partner.

Underlining that relations between the two countries has been rapidly developing in fields, specifically in economics and trade, Sybiha stressed that they aim to increase the trade volume with Turkey to $20 billion.

Following the speeches, Canikli and Sybiha watched the traditional shows.
