Fenerbahçe finds relief in UEFA Europa League
TURKISH powerhouse Fenerbahçe breathed a sigh of relief after beating Belgium’s Anderlecht 2-0 in the UEFA Europa League at Istanbul’s Ülker Şükrü Saraçoğlu Stadium on Thursday.
The Yellow Canaries are going through a rough patch in the Super League. The win will relieve Fener from a lot of pressure who are currently placed 15th, just above the relegation zone.
In the Group D of the Europa League, however, Fenerbahçe is now placed second with seven points. More importantly, it is well placed to move on to the next rounds ahead of third-placed Spartak Trnava (three) and already eliminated Anderlecht (one). Group leader Dinamo Zagreb has 12 points from four matches.
The other Turkish teams in the competition, Beşiktaş and Akhisarspor, did not have a successful outing this week.
Beşiktaş drew 1-1 with Belgium's Genk on Thursday. Akhisarspor, on the other hand, lost 3-2 to Spanish rival Sevilla, despite putting in some good efforts.
