There’s more than just comic books at Dubai event
T his weekend sees the Middle East’s geeks, nerds, cosplayers, and gamers come together to celebrate at the annual Middle East Film and Comic Con. You don’t have to be an avid comic book fan to have a great time at Comic Con though – there’s live music, games, panel discussions, competitions, delicious food, and pop-up shops to enjoy. Here’s some of the highlights for this weekend.
There’s plenty of workshops on throughout the weekend, from voice acting workshops with Pokémon star, Veronica Taylor to special effects make-up training with Jenny Irons (pictured right), as well as a ‘Learn to Draw Disney Characters’ session. There’s a full listing of times and classes on the website to get involved in every day.
Not only is DMC of the legendary Run DMC playing, but you can kick back in the listening to the sounds of Dubai – The Boxtones, and Chronicles of Khan will be performing, as well as entertainment from The 7th Delusion – a Dubai- based magic club. If you fancy performing yourself, there’s geek karaoke, too. It’s all happening at the main stage.
There’s plenty of amazing stars and celebrities to meet and listen to, if Stan Lee, Randy Orton, Nick Frost and Nikolaj Coster Waldau aren’t enough, there’s also Back to the Future star Christoper Lloyd - who played Doc, as well as Firefly’s Summer Glau, creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Kevin Eastman, and plenty more! To buy some merchandise or a unique piece or art, head to Artists’ Alley - where a huge range of local artists, comic book writers, and pop-up stores are located. Pick up a masterpiece, or shop for plenty of various merchandise, from superhero
clothing, to brilliant photographs.
You don’t have to just observe – there are interactive games, including Samsung’s virtual reality goggles for a trial, as well as trying out the Tron bike simulation - based on the hit movie, Tron.
