Indicating is only a part of knowing how to drive safe

Driver training programmes worldwide teach safe driving (defensive driving) procedures among which is the use of indicators to alert other drivers of your intentions. All drivers learn this, so it is alarming to read that 40 per cent of UAE drivers discard the rules in favour of their own. A popular phrase during my driver training was, “watch out for the other guy,” understood to mean that safe driving has as much to do with other drivers as with you; it is not an attitude. Another way of looking at this statistic is to say that the weakness of 40 per cent of UAE drivers is that of wilful stupidity. These are likely the same people who drive at dusk, at dawn, and in fog with their headlights turned off. ST, Abu Dhabi
