Millions vaccinated in campaign to end polio
More than 10.6 million children in Pakistan have now been vaccinated against polio as part of the UAE’s campaign to help eradicate the virus. The UAE Project to Assist Pakistan released an update on its third phase yesterday, which has seen children under five in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Sindh safeguarded against the illness. Children in those areas are given three doses each with the second and third doses being given over the next two months. Experts estimate that polio could be eradicated by 2018, if current efforts continue. Pakistan and Afghanistan are now the only countries in the world where the virus is still classes as ‘endemic’. In 2013, Abu Dhabi hosted the Global Vaccine Summit, during which Dhs14.7 billion was pledged by governments and philanthropists.
