Jailing drivers? We just need a good fines system

7 Days in Dubai - - ENTERTAINMENT -

In reference to the front page of 7DAYS (April 18), ‘Time to Lock Up Reckless Drivers’, whilst I support any idea that has the potential to make our roads safer, I’ve always thought the best way to affect a profound and lasting change in attitudes to driving would be a ‘means tested’ traffic fine system: linking the fine amount to a percentage of earnings. Our current system of fines has no impact on the wealthy who view fines as an acceptable daily expense. A ‘means tested’ system would challenge the mentality of the reckless by expressing the gravity of the offence fairly across levels of our society. Benjamin UAE
