Ryan mixes up his train­ing - in­cor­po­rat­ing strength and car­dio train­ing. One method he uses is ‘tempo run­ning’. He ex­plains: “A tempo run is a pace that is com­fort­ably un­com­fort­able. It doesn’t feel nice at all. It’s hard. You want to stop, be­cause you legs are on fire and lungs are go­ing to ex­plode. But the key is, to make sure you don’t stop. Adding this type of work once a week in train­ing will greatly im­prove your fit­ness and run­ning times.” He also does sprints: “Three x 1,000m, 800m, 600m (and a 200m re­cov­ery af­ter each dis­tance and each round) keep­ing at 5km pace.”
