Shock at attitude of parents who walked in front of car

7 Days in Dubai - - DEAR 7DAYS... -

Two days ago I was driving alongside Town Centre in Jumeirah, approaching the Beach Road. A couple holding hands with their small child of three of four years old crossed the road right in front of me with their backs to me, forcing me to brake sharply. I pulled over and pointed out how dangerous it was for them to put their backs to oncoming traffic when crossing the road. Their response was that they had seen me coming, but “knew I would stop because people in Dubai usually do”. I asked them what they thought would have happened if I had not been such a careful driver, or if I hadn’t seen them, and their answer was “we have been in Dubai for eight years, and people generally stop when we walk out into the road”. What a great example to their child. I have been here since 1979 and heard many crazy things about road safety, but this comment took some beating. Josephine Dubai
