A labourer has been awarded Dhs600,000 in damages after a forklift truck accident left him disabled.

Abu Dhabi Civil Court ordered the technical service company to pay the compensation to the Egyptian after his injuries resulted in permanent disabilities in his legs and other body parts.

Official documents stated that the driver of the forklift didn’t notice the worker who was on duty when he mowed him down and ran over him.

Investigations revealed that the forklift driver didn’t have a licence to operate the heavy machine.

The victim suffered broken legs and a pelvic injury, which has badly affected his ability to walk unaided.

A medical report said the worker suffered 90 per cent walking disability and could no longer move or do other simple tasks on his own. His vision was also partially affected as the accident caused injuries to the cranial nerve. Authorities said the company neglected its duty of providing safety to workers by using unlicensed people, which caused the accident and was in violation of the law. The Egyptian man filed a lawsuit against the firm and demanded Dhs6 million in compensation. But, the court decided he deserved Dhs600,000 in damages following the incident.
