El­shorbagy the man to beat at world squash fi­nals

World No. 1 will ar­rive in Dubai with six ti­tle wins this sea­son

Egyp­tian squash sen­sa­tion and world No. 1 Mo­hamed El­shorbagy will lead the star-stud­ded line-up of play­ers head­ing to the UAE to com­pete in the sea­son-end­ing PSA Dubai World Se­ries Fi­nals later this month.

Fol­low­ing the sev­enth and fi­nal men’s qual­i­fy­ing event last week, El­shorbagy proved that he will be the man to beat in Dubai af­ter win­ning his sixth straight PSA World Ti­tle in front of a de­lighted home crowd in El Gouna, Egypt.

Now the se­ries has con­cluded the top eight ranked male and fe­male play­ers in the PSA Road to Dubai rank­ings will con­test PSA World Se­ries Fi­nals on May 24-28 in a state-of-the-art pur­pose-built venue in Burj Park Down­town Dubai.

The men’s qual­i­fi­ca­tion race has be­longed to El­shorbagy who, de­spite fac­ing tough com­pe­ti­tion in ev­ery event, has been unstoppable this sea­son.

Af­ter los­ing the semi­fi­nal in the first qual­i­fi­ca­tion event, the US Open in Oc­to­ber 2015, the 25-year-old has won all six re­main­ing qual­i­fi­ca­tion events and has amassed a record num­ber of points in the process.

He will now be joined in Dubai by com­pa­triot Omar Mosaad, world cham­pion Gre­gory Gaultier of France and for­mer world No. 1 Nick Matthew of Eng­land. The other four play­ers who will be con­test­ing the ti­tle are Frenchman Mathieu Castag­net, world No. 5 Miguel An­gel Ro­driguez of Colom­bia, Ger­many’s Si­mon Ros­ner and Aus­tralian Cameron Pil­ley. The women’s line-up mean­while was fi­nalised in March and will fea­ture world No. 1 Nour El Sherbini of Egypt, sec­ond seed Laura Mas­saro of Eng­land, eight-time world cham­pion Ni­col David and Egyp­tian ace Ra­neem El Welily. Mak­ing up the eight are France’s Camille Serme, Amer­i­can Amanda Sobhy and Egyp­tian duo Om­neya Ab­del Kawy and Nouran Go­har.

Com­ment­ing on the fi­nals, Saeed Hareb, Sec­re­tary Gen­eral of Dubai Sports Coun­cil said: “The PSA Dubai World Se­ries Fi­nals points to the emi­rate’s grow­ing rep­u­ta­tion as the place to stage thrilling end of sea­son tour­na­ments and we look for­ward to host­ing the world’s very best as they com­pete for this cov­eted ti­tle.”
