REACHING OUT TO DUBAI’S WORKFORCE
A woman has been given three months in jail for beating up a domestic worker who asked for his unpaid salary. The court in Abu Dhabi’s western region of Al Dhafra, handed down the sentence to the Emirati woman after she was found guilty of assaulting the Asian man and insulting a police officer. Official documents showed that the domestic worker complained to police in Al Dhafra after being attacked by his boss. The man told police that the woman hit him with a stick at her home in Al Dhafra after he demanded his unpaid wages that had been delayed for weeks. A medical report confirmed that the worker had been beaten with a stick. When a police officer phoned the defendant to enquire about the issue, the woman hurled verbal assaults at him. The woman denied charges of assault and insulting a police officer. She told the court that she only had a discussion with the worker and expressed surprise that he had reported her to the police. The judge rejected her claims and convicted her based on evidence presented by prosecutors.
