Matthews hoping for tactical tips from Jayawardene
Sri Lanka captain Angelo Matthews hopes to be able to capitalise on Mahela Jayawardene’s inside knowledge of the England team when the two sides clash in a three-Test series beginning later this month.
Jayawardene worked as a batting consultant for England at the recent Twenty20 World Cup and helped the side reach the final in India. However, he no longer has any official role with the side and Matthews hopes that he will be on hand to help Sri Lanka during their tour of England. “When it comes to international cricket there are no secrets to be honest,” said Matthews. “I think we have a lot of video footage, they have video footage of us as well, so there are no real secrets.
“When you get on the park you know what they are up to but there might be a couple of tactical ideas that Mahela can help us with.
“I’m pretty sure that guys like Mahela and [Kumar] Sangakkara will always come and help us.”
England will also know plenty about the touring side with head coach Trevor Bayless and assistant Paul Farbrace both having held the role of head coach with Sri Lanka.
