Angry Birds in town

Comedy star Jason Sudeikis is generally associated with laughter, but he was happy to tap into a hidden emotion in new movie Angry Birds. The 40-year-old, a former sketch writer on Saturday Night Live who has gone on to land big roles on the big and small screens, lends his voice to main character Red in the 3D animated movie based on the popular video game. Red, as the title of the movie suggests, is a bird with anger problems. An outcast on Bird Island, he is sent for anger management lessons over an unfortunate incident with an unhatched egg. Sudeikis, a happily married father and wildly successful A-list celeb, is tongue and cheek when asked whether he had to harness some inner turmoil for his role in the movie. He joked: “It has put me in touch with my inner anger, yeah, as does waking up. “There’s just a ton in my world that makes me angry and ticked off. It’s one thing after another, from the person that I get to sleep next to and my child to my supportive family and cool sisters and great friends. My anger Bingo card is full.” Red is the only bird aware of the apparent danger when a ship full of green pigs, led by Leonard (voiced by Documentary Now star Bill Hader) lands on the island. Another Saturday Night Live veteran, Hader admits filming was a blast. But it’s harder than you might imagine. He joked: “People go, ‘isn’t it so easy and fun?’ I’m so braindead after yelling for five hours, saying the same line, over and over and over again.” While the movie is fun, there’s something to be learned from Red’s story arc. Sudeikis said: “I think speaking for yourself and standing up for yourself is a good thing to learn, regardless of your age or your height.” He adds: “We’re better at acting like anger doesn’t exist, but it still does. Letting it out, every now and then, is a healthy thing. May it never go too far, one way or the other. Don’t hold it all the way in and don’t let it all the way out, but a little toot of anger, every now and then, is a nice thing.”
