Dubai’s aviation chief set out a masterplan for the city’s most ambitious construction project to date at the Dubai Airport Show yesterday.

The sprawling development known as Dubai South, spanning 140 sqkm, will house the biggest airport in the world, the Expo 2020 site and will be one of the world’s biggest real estate hotspots.

Dubai South will help boost Dubai’s GDP by 32 per cent by 2020, Dubai’s aviation chief said during the Global Airport Leaders’ Forum held on the sidelines of the Airport Show.

“Growth of logistics and aviation is integral to Dubai’s economic strength and in developing Dubai South, we are building an integrated airport city, which will have a significant contribution in the economic growth,” said Khalifa Al Zaffin, Chairman of Dubai Aviation City Corporation.

“The infrastructure to provide seamless con- nectivity around Al Maktoum International Airport, so far cost us Dhs220 million.”

Located in Jebel Ali, Dubai South will see a giant metropolis housing one million people built around the airport that will consist of eight districts - the Exhibition District, Aviation District, Logistics District, Commercial District, Golf District, Residential District, Business Park and the Al Maktoum International Airport.

Al Maktoum airport will also be expanded to offer five runways where as many as 250 million passengers a year will land. 90 per cent of flydubai operations will also be moved there.

“Work has already started to expand the existing terminal to handle five million passengers a year to 25 million by the end of 2017,” he said.

Contracts for the further expansion of the airport to accommodate 120 million passengers after 2020 will be awarded to construction firms on May 28.
