Chelsea gets a handle on things
The comedian goes on a serious adventure
Fed up with all the celebrity shtick, comedian Chelsea Handler exited her long-running hit show Chelsea Lately, and occupied herself penning books and other projects. But now TV’s ‘queen of mean’ returns for a different kind of ‘late-night talk show’ on Netflix. “By nature of me being myself, it will be different,” she said.
“All these shows try to start out selling something different, and ultimately all become the same, just with a different guy. I have to do everything I can to prevent that from happening. ”
She’s turning things around for the new show Chelsea, which debuts today. Similar to her four-part docucomedy series run on the streaming site early this year, Chelsea won’t be chatting with stars behind a desk. The show will have some studio segments but more on-field work filmed around the world with Chelsea throwing around questions and getting thought-provoking results. One thing is for sure, it’s going to be different to her last show. She said of the series that ran on E!: “We’re surrounded by people who are nonsense.
“No one’s coming to this network looking for news or political stories or human interest or global issues. None of the things I’m interested in are being talked about.”
Chelsea is a different proposition altogether - judging by the trailer, it’s a wild ride smattered with the star’s acerbic wit. We see the 41-yearold being smacked by leaves, dressing up in Japan and carrying around a Donald Trump piñata.
Executive producer Bill Wolff says it’s all about conversations.
He says: “Guests come from a wide range of areas, so that could be entertainers, but also politicians, newsmakers, experts. Part of the challenge is to put different material through her comedic prism.”
Chelsea added: “I always think it's better to let it all hang out. It’s like the same reason on Instagram, I try not to use filters on my face, or post pictures that aren’t as beautiful as everyone trying to make themselves look beautiful all the time. Or why on Snapchat I’m half naked, rapping like an idiot. Because that's a part of how I am.”
