A Ministry of Labour inspector has gone on trial for asking for a Dhs50,000 bribe from a spa owner in exchange for tipping her off about unannounced inspections. Dubai Court of First Instance was told that the 42-year-old Chinese spa owner received a call from the 31-year-old Emirati inspector asking for money. She claimed that last year, he came to her spa and issued a Dhs80,000 fine for some unspecified violations. She testified: “I know him as an inspector and he called me offering his help to avoid sudden inspections. He asked me to pay him and he would tell me before the inspectors’ arrival to the spa.” Prosecutors said that he asked for Dhs60,000 from her for his help then reduced the amount to Dhs50,000. She cooperated with police to set a trap and police arrested a Pakistani driver who came to collect the bribe money. The accused denied asking for a bribe. He was charged with seeking payment while the 20-year-old Pakistani driver denied aiding and abetting. The trial was adjourned.
